Monte Carlo Determination of Full Energy Peak Efficiency for HPGe Detector and Self-Absorption Correction of Environmental Samples
Authors
Abstract:
The Monte Carlo method was used to determine full energy efficiency of a high-purity germanium (HPGe) coaxial detector within an energy range of 53.2-2614 keV. Also, measurement was carried out for a standard Marinelli beaker of 600cm3, which was placed into the reference material of mixed gamma. The plot of the experimentally derived efficiency versus the incident gamma radiation energy showed variations at certain energies which is attributed to the detector’s characteristics. The results obtained by the Monte Carlo method and those of the experimental measurements resulted in a standard deviation of 2.3 to 7%. The method was also applied to determine self-absorption correction of the environmental radioactive materials which gave rise to a deviation of 3–12%.

Analyzes of environmental samples regarding their radioactivity is of important concern for health purposes. We need standard sources to determine radioactive components and their activities. These sources are usually produced regarding type of the sample. One of the fundamental and precise tools to recognize radioactive materials and their activities is HPGe detector. To reach this goal, the d...

In this work we calibrated the NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors (5.08 × 5.08 cm and 7.62 × 7.62 cm) and the Full Energy Peak Efficiency (FEPE) for these detectors have been calculated for point sources placed at different positions on the detector axis using the analytical approach of the effective solid angle ratio. This approach is based on the direct mathematical method reported by Selim and ...
full textDerivation of an efficiency-calibration simulation for a well-type HPGe detector using the Monte Carlo approach and analytical techniques
Simulation is a simple method that allows for facile estimation of a detector response function when the specifications of the investigated sample and the sample-detector geometry are known. In this study, the dependence of the full-energy peak efficiency on the sample and detector specifications was studied via analytical techniques and the Monte Carlo approach in the energy range of 150e2000 ...
